Personal Growth: Where Mindset Meets Emotional Intelligence

Mindset and emotional intelligence are two terms that are often used interchangeably, but they are actually quite different. Mindset refers to an individual’s belief system or attitude, emotional intelligence refers to an individual’s ability to recognize, understand, and manage their emotions.

The Difference Between Mindset and Emotional Intelligence

While mindset and emotional intelligence are both important for personal and professional success, they are distinct concepts. Mindset is a belief system or attitude, while emotional intelligence is a set of skills that can be developed through practice and learning. A person’s mindset will influence how they approach a situation, emotional intelligence is what enables them to effectively navigate the situation.

For example, an individual with a growth mindset (more on growth mindsets later!) may be more likely to approach a challenging situation with a positive attitude, but it is their emotional intelligence that will enable them to effectively manage their emotions and respond in a productive way. Emotional intelligence enables individuals to effectively navigate challenging situations, build strong relationships, and achieve their goals.

What does this look like in real life?

Often, when we approach a new challenge, whether it’s starting a new business, a new diet, a new job, etc., we enter with a positive attitude and a sense of excitement. Our mindset and emotional state are in synce. They’re both ready for the challenge. However, as time wears on and we meet challenges in these new adventures our mental and emotional states get out of sync.

When we hit this area of fatigue, frustration, apathy, or whatever you’re feeling, we may think we need to double down on our mindset. This is often easiest because you can easily identify your thoughts. I’ve been guilty of this in the past. However, this only addresses one aspect of your internal state. You may be able to will yourself through challenges in the short run but eventually YOU WILL BURN OUT!

That is why it’s important to not only be mindful of your mental state but also your emotional state. Be mindful of what your emotions are telling you and work to bring those back in line with your mindset. Your thoughts create emotions and conversely your emotions create thoughts. They intertwined. When you only focus on one or the other the likelihood of you achieving what you set out for becomes extremely difficult.
